Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to evaluate physiological and metabolic characteristics, energy and nutrient requirements during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, preschool age, school age, and adolescence; to understand breastfeeding and complementary feeding principles; to assess common nutrition-related problems in childhood and adolescence through evidence-based approaches; and to develop period- and individual-specific nutrition recommendations, plan nutrition education, and transfer these competencies into clinical and community nutrition practice.

Course Content

The course covers the importance of maternal and child nutrition in Türkiye and worldwide; physiological changes during pregnancy and lactation; energy and nutrient requirements during pregnancy and breastfeeding; fetal nutrition; infant nutrition in the first year of life; the composition and benefits of breast milk; complementary feeding; infant formulas; nutrition during preschool, school-age, and adolescent periods; growth monitoring; nutrition-related problems such as childhood and adolescent obesity, undernutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies; and preventive and therapeutic nutrition approaches for these problems.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explains physiological and metabolic changes during pregnancy and lactation and their relationship with nutritional requirements.
2.Evaluates the energy, macro- and micronutrient requirements of pregnant and lactating women based on evidence-based guidelines and develops appropriate nutrition recommendations.
3.Explains the basic principles of breast milk, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and infant formulas during infancy and develops age-appropriate feeding plans.
4.Evaluates growth and developmental characteristics as well as energy and nutrient requirements during preschool, school-age, and adolescent periods.
5.Identifies common nutrition-related problems among mothers, infants, children, and adolescents and develops preventive, therapeutic, and educational solutions.
6.Plans nutrition education, counseling, and follow-up processes for maternal and child nutrition at individual and community levels using ethical and evidence-based approaches.

Importance of maternal and child nutrition in Türkiye and worldwide; key indicators and the life-course approach
Week 2 - Theoretical
Pregnancy physiology, metabolic and endocrine changes; fetal nutrition and common problems during pregnancy
Week 3 - Theoretical
Energy, macro- and micronutrient requirements during pregnancy; nutrition counseling in pregnancy
Week 4 - Theoretical
Lactation physiology, nutritional requirements during breastfeeding, and common problems
Week 5 - Theoretical
Infant nutrition in the first year; gastrointestinal development, growth monitoring, and nutrition assessment
Week 6 - Theoretical
Breast milk: composition, benefits, breastfeeding principles, and breastfeeding support
Week 7 - Theoretical
Case-based discussion: pregnancy, lactation, and infant nutrition
Week 8 - Theoretical
Transition to complementary feeding: timing, food selection, portions, safe preparation, and responsive feeding and midterm exam

Infant formulas: types, indications, composition, safe use principles, and ethical considerations

Preschool nutrition: growth, eating behaviors, food selectivity, and family-based approaches
