The aim of this course is to teach the assessment of nutritional status, determination of energy and nutrient requirements, and principles of evidence-based medical nutrition therapy in congenital metabolic disorders and selected acute and chronic diseases of childhood. Students are expected to gain the knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and monitor individualized medical nutrition therapy for protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism disorders, as well as renal, neurological, oncological, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases.
This course covers medical nutrition therapy in disorders of protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism; kidney diseases, neurological diseases, oncological diseases, congenital heart diseases, infectious diseases, and food allergies and intolerances. It examines the determination of disease-specific energy and nutrient requirements, assessment of nutritional status, the use of special medical purpose foods and nutritional products, the creation of individualized nutritional plans, and the monitoring and evaluation principles of medical nutrition therapy.
