The aim of this doctoral-level course is to develop students’ ability to think theoretically in tourism research and to design research grounded in sound scientific principles. The course seeks to enable students to critically evaluate how theories are developed, tested, and translated into research models within the social sciences. Students are expected to gain competence in analyzing existing theories, identifying theoretical gaps, and formulating original research questions that contribute to the advancement of tourism knowledge.
This course covers the philosophy of science, approaches to theory development in social sciences, and the main theoretical frameworks used in tourism research. It addresses deductive, inductive, and abductive reasoning as foundations of theory building. Key behavioral, organizational, experiential, and sustainability-oriented theories commonly applied in tourism studies are critically examined. The course also focuses on essential components of research design, including the development of research questions, construction of conceptual frameworks, specification of variables and their relationships, and hypothesis formulation. Overall, the course emphasizes the role of theory not only as an explanatory tool but also as a fundamental structure for generating new scientific knowledge in tourism research.
